July 24th 2017; Macroom GAA Juvenile Update.   23/07/2017

Cúl Camp: We had a very successful Cúl Camp this week. Ably co-ordinated by Bríd O’Riordan, assisted by Elaine Kiernan with help from her children Grace and Daragh, we catered for 124 children. 80 boys and 24 girls attended and their behaviour all week was of the highest order. We offer our commiserations to Matchek and Con who suffered arm injuries; both are being treated with slings and hopefully will be back playing football very soon. We wish them a speedy recovery. Danny O’Keeffe and Shane Dunne were in charge of coaching and the coaches, and ensured that everyone both enjoyed themselves and improved their skills. The coaches brought fun, life and sparkle to proceedings and did an excellent job.

On Monday, Noel Crowley, county co-ordinator called and was generous with his time, advice and spares. Legendary manager, coach, lecturer and wise man, Eamon Ryan, called on Tuesday. It was a pleasure to listen to him and to see him effortlessly engage the children’s attention and impart gems of knowledge.  Cork football super star, Seán Powter, visited on Thursday and what a great young man he is. He made a big impact on the players and fielded his many questions with great skill. Briege Corkery, joint record holder of Senior All-Irelands, presented the medals on Fri. and we are grateful to her for making herself available at short notice. As well as her sporting talents, Briege is a great ‘peoples’ person and was superb with the boys and girls; she spoke eloquently, presented the medals and posed for photos for all those present.

Finally we would like to thank the parent club, and the particularly the juvenile section, for their help and support. A great debt of gratitude is due to those who organized and managed the camp. The children were superb – probably the best Macroom Cúl Camp group yet - and made the week-long event pleasant and enjoyable for all. Proceedings were completed with the traditional water battle.

The junior coaches were Seán, Ethan, Blake, Cillian, Liam, Cian, Michelle, Emer, Eibhlís, Niamh, Lily, Paul, Alan, Olan, Kieran and Eoin.

Matches:

Minors; they played and beat Canovee in a practice game on Sat. night 21/7/2017 in the Castle Grounds. The score was Macroom 4-14, Canovee 1-12.

Under 15s; they were well beaten by Clondrohid in the championship in the Castle Grounds on Wed. 19/7/2017. Early misses proved costly. Lack of preparation and the absence of some players did not help. Best for Macroom were Reece Lee, James Galvin, David Hunt, Jack Sexton, Shane Sweeney and Cormac Buckley.

U-12s; they were narrowly beaten by Canovee in a practice game in Carrigadrohid on 20/7/2017.

Fixtures:

U-10s; they play Naomh Abán in Ballyvourney on Mon. evening.
